Abstract:
This spatial inventory of Montana dams was assembled by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks from the National Inventory of Dams (NID), maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Data from the NID about the size, type, purpose, owner, year built, and hazard classification are included in the data.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
The data were simply compiled into one dataset and very little attribute editing or quality checking were performed. The accuracy of the source data sets is unknown.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Some dams in the National Inventory of Dams were found to be between 100 yards and 20 miles away from their correct positions.

Process step:
The data were assembled from two datasets: the National Inventory of Dams (NID), maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) dams feature class. The NID data were an ASCII text table containing spatial coordinates (latitude-longitude) and attributes. The GNIS data were obtained from the Natural Resource Information System (NRIS) at the Montana State Library. The two datasets were then compared for duplicates, first spatially by identifying points that were within 100 meters of any other point in the other dataset and then visually comparing the attributes to determine whether or not they were unique. Secondly, the two data sets were checked for duplicate names and their uniqueness again visually compared. The two datasets were then combined.

Process step:
Browse through the data and move some NID dams to their correct posistions, removing GNIS dams that they duplicate. The following dams were moved: THOMPSON FALLS - INTAKE DAM A , THOMPSON FALLS - INTAKE DAM B, THOMPSON FALLS - DRY CHANNEL DAM, THOMPSON FALLS - MAIN CHANNEL DAM, BIGFORK DAM, LOWER TWO MEDICINE DAM, FRENCHMAN DAM, LAKE FRANCES NORTH DAM, LITTLE BITTERROOT DAM, KERR DAM, MCGREGOR LAKE DAM, MILLTOWN DAM, CANYON FERRY DAM, TOSTON DAM, HEBGEN DAM, HOLTER DAM.

The name of BROADWATER DAM was changed to TOSTON DAM and SWAN RIVER DIVERSION DAM was changed to BIGFORK DAM.

The Latitude and Longitude coordinates were re-calculated, and the kilowatt capacity of hydroelectric plants was added from a database provided by the Montana Dept of Environmental Quality.

Move Hemund Dam from 46.76N 111.8583W to 45.76N 111.8655 W. Delete George Hemund Dam, which was at 45.7716N -111.8192W, which may never have existed.

Process step:
Change the height of HELL ROARING DAM near Flathead Lake from -9 to 11. This was done when I noticed that it was the only dam in the layer with a kilowatt figure that did not have a height. I found a permit document for construction to reduce the dam height by 9 feet in 2011 to address safety concerns. The original plans for the dam in this document show that it was about 20 feet high.
